Term 3
– 2018 Overview
This term overview is an indication
of the work I have planned and will be adjusted according to student response
and other opportunities for learning that occur throughout the term.
English
Students will
partake in various class based English lessons every day and cover the
following components of English:
Phonics and
Spelling:
Students will
revise Set 1-4 of the phonograms through repetition of verbal, visual and
physical cues. Students will be completing the Get Spelling program (a Year 2
program which follows on from RWI). The program will focus on a group of sounds
and students will be engaged in activities such as; marking up groups of words,
counting syllables, adding suffixes and prefixes and looking at homophones etc.
Spelling:
In class students
will be learning how to spell the third and fourth hundred oxford sight words
to assist with their writing. They will complete spelling contracts with these
words as well as words they spell incorrectly in their writing. As well as
this, students will practice their handwriting to correctly form upper and
lower-case letters.
Writing:
Our writing focus will be on Information Reports, Persuasive
writing and Narratives. They will create short texts drawing on their
experiences, imagination and information they have learnt.
We will
revise the use of capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and ensuring their
sentences make sense. During Grammar lessons, students will be learning about
prefixes and suffixes, conjunctions and synonyms and antonyms. They will be
learning to punctuate their sentences correctly and to use speech marks.
Reading:
Students will
be reading aloud and developing their fluency, accuracy and expression. When reading,
they will be using the phonograms and knowledge of letters as well as high
frequency words. The students will learn strategies each week as a focus on
comprehension of texts. They will be completing reading response related to the
learnt strategy and applying these strategies in our weekly Library sessions
and Guided Reading groups.
Oral
Language:
Will be
developed through a play-based curriculum. Students will take part in
investigations to develop their speaking and listening skills through play-based
activities and presentations. Students share their work with their peers and
discuss ideas in small groups as well as with the whole class.
Maths
Students will
take part in lessons this term that are based on Number and Measurement. A
typical math lesson will entail the following:
A mental
routine:
This is a
‘warm-up’ for students before commencing a Numeracy lesson. Students have
whiteboards with an exercise in them and they answer questions that are closed
(one answer only), open (multiple answers) and a flip question (students ask
the teacher yes or no questions.)
Students then
engage in one of the following processes.
A
problematised Situation.
Students are
presented with a realistic life situation that requires them to apply mathematical
knowledge to reach a solution. e.g I have to buy enough cakes for 15 people
coming to my party. The cakes are sold in packets of four. How many packets do
I need? The students are given an opportunity to de-code the language of the
problem as well as apply the strategies they know to try and solve a problem.
They are encouraged to use a range of strategies to work out the answer.
A Strategy
Session:
In this
session students are explicitly taught specific skills they can use to solve
the earlier problematised situation in a range of ways. In this case they may
be shown a number of techniques for dividing a number. Having previously viewed
the students' attempts the teacher can then tailor what they teach in a way
that builds on what students already know.
A Reflection
Session:
Students
answer questions based on their findings and discuss strategies used and learnt
from the lesson.
In Term 3,
students will be grouping, partitioning and rearranging collections up to 1000
in hundreds, tens and ones to facilitate more efficient counting. They will be
recognising halves, quarters and eighths of shapes and collections.
We will be
measuring length, area, volume and capacity.
HASS
In HASS students will be learning
about their place in the world at different scales, eg. Our community, state,
country, continent etc. The different geographical divisions will be explored
as well as how maps are used.
Technologies
Students will
be using Google docs and slides to publish, save and share their work. They
will access websites and use iPad apps such as Studyladder and typing.com to
reinforce what has been taught in the classroom and learn new digital
technology skills.
Specialist Subjects
Students participate in weekly Science, P.E, Japanese and Music lessons.
